WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — A new center in Waterbury is working to inspire and empower black and brown girls throughout the community. Save Girls on F.Y.E.R., is a leadership center for girls of color, led by women of color. F.Y.E.R. stands for future, young educated role models.

Although more conscientious efforts towards funding for women continue to increase, the statistics are still staggering, especially for Black women. Moreover, looking at the micro-level of financing for women, young Black girls, femmes and gender-expansive youth receive even a smaller amount of monetary support.

Waterbury — A grant-funded partnership etween the city-based Save Girls on F.Y.E.R. and the Constitution State Junior Roller Derby is designed to introduce the expensive, aggressive and white-dominated sport to inner city minority girls between ages 7 and 17.

Waterbury — The Girls climbed one by one into the parked van, bound for an activity inner city youth rarely get an opportunity to participate in —  sailing and kayaking lessons.

Waterbury — It didn't suprise Jacquee Porter when news reports surfaced last week that an African-American news anchor in Mississippi was told her natural hair was "unprofessional."
